This book is about a family of four (a dad, a mom, and two sisters) who live in the country of Afghanistan. There, you can get seriously hurt or in trouble if you do something that the Taliban doesn't like. Suddenly, the dad is put in prison, and he was the family's only source of income as a reader and writer, since girls can't work. Then the family makes the young, pre-teen girl cut her hair like a boy's and work, because she can read and write. Her sister couldn't work since you can really tell that her sister is a girl, even if her hair was cut short. So this story is about a family struggling to hide their disobedience toward the Taliban.
