Heck: Where the Bad Kids Go

Heck: Where the Bad Kids Go

By Dale E. Basye

One day, 11-year old Milton Fauster and his 13-year old sister Marlo are in the Grizzly Mall of Generica, Kansas. They go into a store where Marlo shoplifts some lip gloss, which she surreptitiously stashes in Milton's backpack without his knowledge. A mall security officer spots this, and tries to accost the two. As Marlo and Milton are running through the mall with the security guard chasing them, Milton realizes Marlo tricked him into being an accomplice. Pausing for a moment in front of a giant marshmallow statue of a Grizzly Bear, and Milton spots Damian Ruffino, his extremely unhygienic tormentor, school bully, and all -around delinquent, sticking dynamite in the marshmallow grizzly's behind. Before the mall security guards can catch up with them, the marshmallow grizzly bear explodes prematurely, and Milton, Marlo, and Damian all die. The last thing they see is flaming marshmallow all over the mall. The next thing they know, Milton and Marlo are holding hands and plummeting downward and Milton feels a slight sting. When he and Marlo land, they find themselves in Limbo, the waiting area for the Nine Circles of Heck, which include Rapacia, Blimpo, Fibble, Snivel, Precocia, Lipptor (Wise Acres), Sadia, and Dupli-City. Because of her sins (e.g., the shoplifting) Marlo has been sent to a sort of "lite" version of Hell reserved for bad kids, called "Heck"; Milton, apparently, has been judged guilty by association and sent there with his sister. Processed through the afterlife's terrible bureaucracy, Marlo and Milton are conveyed to a nightmare of a school in Heck, presided over by principal Bea "Elsa" Bubb, who torments her charges with pretty much the worse things they can imagine in a school. Milton and Marlo are separated and Milton meets Virgil, who befriends him, and the two plot an escape from heck and return to Earth and the land of the living. But Damien, who has been bad enough that he has started to rise in the hierarchy of Heck, is sent after them and foils their plans, landing them back in Heck. Marlo, meanwhile, has been causing her own brand of chaos by organizing a resistance among the girls in the heckish school, causing Principal Bubb to decide that the Fauster siblings are problem children. She decides to deal with them by sending them to the next lower circle of Heck: Rapacia.

Poison Apple #3: Miss Fortune

Poison Apple #3: Miss Fortune

By Brandi Dougherty

I love a good old fashioned "fortune teller gone bad" story. And this novel lives up to that potential...and then some. Since this is aimed at the youngsters (ages 8-12), I will say that the author does take this responsibility with great care. She produces a solid story line with just enough creepiness to not give your eight-year-old nightmares and just enough to keep your twelve-year-old engaged (unless her mind has already been tainted with horror/slasher films). Mia and Zoe are best friends who do it all together. They decide to attend a carnival with a group of friends, and before the night is over, one of their lives will be dramatically changed for the worst...that would be Zoe. You see, Zoe makes a mistake. While her friend Mia is having her fortune read, Zoe sort of/kind of makes fun of the fortune teller. Well, any good skeptic will know this is just not the best of plans, and soon Zoe finds that out, beginning the morning after the reading.

Plants vs. Zombies Volume 4: Grown Sweet Home

By Paul Tobin

Plants vs Zombies is one of my favorite graphic novels to read. I love seeing how the plants defeat the zombies. They always have a good plan.

The Battle of the Red Hot Pepper Weenies: And Other Warped and Creepy Tales (Weenies Stories)

The Battle of the Red Hot Pepper Weenies: And Other Warped and Creepy Tales (Weenies Stories)

By David Lubar

Have you ever heard about a hot dog getting braces? No well maybe you should read this book. My book is called The Battle of the Red Hot Pepper Weenies by David Lubar. Their setting is on our world except instead of humans people are walking and talking hot dogs known as weenies. There is not a main character in my book in every chapter there is a new story about new people in a different place in the world at different times. A girl hot dog doesn't have a date for the school dance until her dad makes one for her in his lab. A family of hot dogs enjoys a nice Thanksgiving dinner until they are interrupted by a group of turkeys out for revenge. A princess meets a pea-brained suitor in her castle and has to deal with him. The battle of the two red hot pepper weenies ends in flames and in a bad way. Someone that likes weird and dumb books would like this book series because these books are very weird and dumb in some ways. Some people don’t like books like that but some other people do like me.

I really loved this book. It was an exciting read. There were some parts that were funny and there were some parts that seemed more serious. I think this book is a good read for middle school students.

Ghostbuster's Handbook (Ghostbusters 2016 Movie)

Ghostbuster's Handbook (Ghostbusters 2016 Movie)

By Daphne Pendergrass

I thought that this was I nice guide to the 2016 movie. It has facts about the girls and the ghosts. It has the style of trying to teach you to be a ghostbuster. It even has a quiz and award on the back! I recommend this book for any Ghostbusters fan.
