A funny, moving, and true story of an ordinary boy with an extraordinary face that's perfect for fans of Wonder—now available in the U.S.

When Robert Hoge was born, he had a tumor the size of a tennis ball in the middle of his face and short, twisted legs. Surgeons removed the tumor and made him a new nose from one of his toes.  Amazingly, he survived—with a face that would never be the same.

Strangers stared at him. Kids called him names, and adults could be cruel, too. Everybody seemed to agree that he was “ugly.” But Robert refused to let his face define him. He played pranks, got into trouble, had adventures with his big family, and finally found a sport that was perfect for him to play. And Robert came face to face with the biggest decision of his life, he followed his heart.

This poignant memoir about overcoming bullying and thriving with disabilities shows that what makes us “ugly” also makes us who we are. It features a reflective foil cover and black-and-white illustrations throughout.

"Ugly" is about a boy that was born a bit more different than others. This book is inspiring since it shows that looking different doesn't matter, you can look differently and still play games and have friends. The book shows that looks don't matter. I like the book since its humorous and shows mostly about his life.

This book is about a kid that lived healthy and great life - but he didn't look so good. He has been a bit bullied, poor kid. I might help him even though he's different than everyone else. I recommend this book because it makes me feel so emotional. It is the best book I have read yet. Well, I hope you'll like the book.

I recommend you read the book "Ugly" because it is a good book. It tells about a boy that was born with a tumor in the middle of his face and was also born with little legs so he has to wear prosthetic legs.

I like the book ugly because it is a sad story. The kid Robert Hoge got bullied just because he was ugly but at least he is beautiful inside.

Jose Jose

Ugly is about a boy named Robert who had many operations because of his deformed face and legs. Somebody would like this book because its an autobiography about a person in his childhood who fought through teasing just because of the way he looked. Also because the story was well written and few illustrations were great. But the lesson I learned in this novel is to don't listen to other people just be yourself.

Robert Hoge was born with many disabilities that caused bullying and teasing. He also needed to have many major surgeries as a child. In my opinion this book was really important because it taught me that it's okay to be different. People should read this book because, it teaches that no matter how you look, it only matters of what's inside.
