This is a wonderful story about a little girl named Manami. Manami is of Japanese descent but is an American citizen. She lives on an Island off of California with her mom, dad, grandpa, neighbors, friends, and dog Yujiin. All was happy until the attack on Pearl Harber in 1942. All of those who looked like Japanese people were now classified as dangerous. They hauled them off to encampments where they would stay until the war was over. When it was time for Manami and her family and friends to leave she smuggled Yujiin with her. But a guard found out and took Yujiin away. After that moment Manami went mute. Every day she wished that Yujiin would come back that he had escaped and was coming back for her. She started drawing pictures trying to guide him back to her. Every other dog that she saw made her sad and mad that she couldn't have Yujiin there with her licking up her tears.
