From bestselling and award-winning author Sara Pennypacker comes a beautifully wrought, utterly compelling novel about the powerful relationship between a boy and his fox. Pax is destined to become a classic, beloved for generations to come.

Pax and Peter have been inseparable ever since Peter rescued him as a kit. But one day, the unimaginable happens: Peter's dad enlists in the military and makes him return the fox to the wild.

At his grandfather's house, three hundred miles away from home, Peter knows he isn't where he should be—with Pax. He strikes out on his own despite the encroaching war, spurred by love, loyalty, and grief, to be reunited with his fox.

Meanwhile Pax, steadfastly waiting for his boy, embarks on adventures and discoveries of his own. . . .

When Peter first laid eyes on the fox kit, alone in the den, Peter knew he would become his best friend. After bringing the fox back, Peter decides to name him Pax. During the five years from then, their relationship has only grown stronger until they are inseparable. One fateful day, Peter's father informs him that he's leaving to fight in the war, and that Pax will have to be left in the forest. Peter tries to protest, but in the end, they drop off Pax in the woods, and Peter is sent to live with his grandfather. After only a day, Peter decides to trek the 50 miles to the forest where he left Pax. But he trips over a root and breaks his leg. Vola, a woman, living in the woods, finds and takes care of Peter. Will the two friends ever reunite?

When Pax, a fox, and Peter, a boy, found each other they knew that they would be best friends. Peter and Pax are always together and always friends. Life is perfect for each other. But then one horrible day, Peter's father gets into the military and the family moves. Peter leaves his home, his friends, his school, and...Pax. Now Pax is a free fox. As the time away from Pax makes Peter heart-broken, he is destined to find Pax and reunite the friendship. Meanwhile, Pax is patiently waiting for Peter: his boy, to come back and learning about being free. A sad, heartbreaking, yet kind and friendship book. Happy reading!
