Hailed as “a breakneck, jam-packed roller coaster of an adventure” by J. K. Rowling, this New York Times bestseller is the first installment in the explosive tween fantasy series by famed Hollywood director Chris Columbus (of Harry Potter fame) and bestselling author Ned Vizzini (It’s Kind of a Funny Story).

Siblings Brendan, Eleanor, and Cordelia Walker once had everything they could ever want. But everything changed when Dr. Walker lost his job. Now the family must relocate to an old Victorian house, formerly the home of occult novelist Denver Kristoff—a house that simultaneously feels creepy and too good to be true. By the time the Walkers realize that one of their neighbors has sinister plans for them, they’re banished to a primeval forest way off the grid.

Bloodthirsty medieval warriors patrol the woods around them, supernatural pirates roam the neighboring seas, and a power-hungry queen rules the land. To survive, the siblings will have to be braver than they ever thought possible—and to fight against their darkest impulses. The key may lie in their own connection to the secret Kristoff legacy. But as they unravel that legacy, they’ll discover that it’s not just their family that’s in danger . . . it’s the entire world.

This book is about three kids who are sent into a magical world where the stories in books happen. They will have to fight trolls, take over a pirate ship, battle a colossus, and team with pirates, a good colossus, a World War 1 pilot, and a group of rebels. And they'll never get home unless the find the book of Doom and Desire.

GREAT BOOK, EVERYONE SHOULD READ IT!!!!! Cordelia (15) , Brendan (12), and Eleanor (8) have literally EVERYTHING they could ever want but then their Dad loses his job after a weird event, and they move to an extremely creepy victorian house that once belonged to Denver Kristoff a novelist. SPOILER ALERT!!!!!!!!! Then they are horrified when they find out that their parents are dead. And that they are characters in a book that Kristoff has written, Cordelia has read the book before and knows what will happen to them. Their adventure continues, I won't say more because now you have to read it yourself!!! READ THIS BOOK!!!!!!!!!

I really enjoyed this book because of its contents of magic, history, and adventure. It's about three siblings and their adventure to save their parents from the Wind Witch. The characters are Eleanor,Brendan, and Cordelia. Their main focus is saving their parents by using The Book of Doom and Desire. My favorite part was when the kids faced of against pirates. I recommend this book to lovers of complicated adventure and magic.

The House of secrets was an awesome book. It was relaxing to read. The house in the story had many secrets when Cordelia, Brendan, and Eleanor Walker, the Walker siblings were in it.

The new Walkers are courageous, speedy thinkers which all readers will grow to love. With a different adventure that seems to reach every chapter, the story unfolds rapidly, therefore keeping kids hooked and wanting to find out what will happen next. Brendan, Eleanor, and Cordelia Walker once had everything they wanted. But all changed when Dr. Walker lost his job. Now the family must move to an old Victorian house; a house that simultaneously feels creepy and too good to be true. By the time the Walkers recognize that one of their neighbors has evil plans for them, they’re banished to a forest far away! DUN, DUN, DUN! I recommend this book to people who love action and adventure.
