Reflection: A Twisted Tale

Reflection: A Twisted Tale

By Elizabeth Lim

“When will my reflection show who I am inside.” I’ve always been a fan of Mulan. The movie is stunning. As a little girl I thought Mulan was amazing, but now I see her as an inspiration to all women. Reflection by Elizabeth Lim is a masterpiece. I loved the characters and plot twists so much. Speaking of… ***Characters*** Fa Mulan/Ping- Mulan (like I said) is an inspiration to all women out there. I liked how she made everyone believe that Ping is an actual person. Women make strong men! Respect for Mulan… Li Shang- Was a very mysterious character. I loved how he was bold and strong at first, but opened up to Mulan about his feelings and even his feelings for her. I like how he developed after his visit to the underworld (Diyu). ***Setting*** Diyu was a very nice and planned out setting. It really showed that Lim took the time and effort to plan it out. Every single thing is carefully planned and described for us readers, from the sky to the grass under Mulan’s feet. As an author-in-progress, Elizabeth Lim is an author that I look up to now. I am taking her work as an example for my writing! Look out for a ‘Dedicated to Elizabeth Lim’ novel! In all… I really liked this book. It is definitely a book to look out for! March 27, 2018! Oh! And did you see the gorgeous final cover? I am buying a second copy! Five stars from me! I received an ARC from Disney Hyperion; this has not influenced my opinion in any way.

Oxford Bookworms Library: The Phantom of the Opera: Level 1: 400-Word Vocabulary

Oxford Bookworms Library: The Phantom of the Opera: Level 1: 400-Word Vocabulary

By Jennifer Bassett

This book "The phantom of the Opera" is talking about a person that live in a big opera, many people think that he is a ghost, because they think that he is very ugly. He always wearing a mask to hide her face behind the mask, but he has a good voice, better than many people. One girl find him and started singing with him and the man is fall in love. He is dangerous and scary, many accident will maybe because of him. I think it is scary in some part of the book. This book use many sentences to make me think the scenes in my mind. My favourite character is the girl that sing with that man. I think she has a good voice and she is pretty. I think this book makes many mystery things to make the readers think more about the story. I think this book were mysterious and excited.

The Next Great Paulie Fink

The Next Great Paulie Fink

By Ali Benjamin

OK... WOW. This book surpassed all my expectations and more! Caitlyn is the new girl in town at the Mitchell School in Mitchell, Vermont, aka THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE. Seriously! The 7th grade literally only has 10 kids! Well, 11 now, with Caitlyn. And it seems like there used to be 11 kids in the year before too, a kid named Paulie Fink being the eleventh. Everyone expected Caitlyn to be Paulie when she walked in the door, but Paulie never showed up. Paulie was indefinitely missing to the 7th grade class of Mitchell, nicknamed the Originals after being the first class to start off the brand new school in kindergarten. As Caitlyn asks who Paulie is, she is overwhelmed with stories about his tricks and pranks and overall, how great of a person he was and how great he made going to school be. Caitlyn never really gets a grasp of the real Paulie Fink, she only gets snippets through the stories. But what she does know is that this kid was a legend amongst the Originals, and life really seems to be duller without him. But then Caitlyn comes up with an idea to try to get in with the Originals and become a popular 'silver dollar,' as she puts it. Caitlyn wants to have a contest to decide a NEW Paulie Fink to take his place as class clown and make school less boring again! The rest of the students vote Caitlyn as judge, and she puts them through intense rounds of elimination to find a new Great Paulie Fink! I flew through this incredible book and the ending kept me hanging on! Totally different then what I expected, honestly. And it was GREAT. I LOVE LOVE LOVED this book! I've read "The Thing About Jellyfish" by this same author, Ali Benjamin, and this was a great second novel to top it off. This book was filled with laughs, adventure, and realistic situations of middle school, and no joke, my eyes filled with tears as the book came to a close. I didn't want it to end! I recommend this book to any middle schooler, or really anyone who goes to school, or anyone who doesn't! Everyone should read this book! 5/5 stars and I recommend it for ages 8+. A really a great novel, I can't say that enough, and I can't wait to see more novels from Ali Benjamin in the future!

Glass Sword (Red Queen)

Glass Sword (Red Queen)

By Victoria Aveyard

To my disappointment, Glass Sword did not live up to my expectations at all. Its predecessor, Red Queen, was enthralling and left my vying for more, but this is not the sequel for me. First of all, most of the beginning and middle of the book consists of Mare wrangling with her emotions. She doesn't do much except for think about things like "Oh, I wonder how Cal's shaping up," and "How do I betray Maven," even though she literally does nothing half of the time. Also, as Mare and the other Reds venture through the kingdom, the book has a knack of going into long descriptions about their surroundings - which might seem essential, but it's a real drag. Most of the time, Mare is indecisive, reckless, and completely over her head. It makes me really uncomfortable even to read the story from her perspective. And the ending could rival even that of the first book, but by that time, it was too late; I was bored out of my mind. It took a lot out of me even to make it to the end, so dreadful was the writing. All in all, if you want to read about a protagonist stuck in her head most of the time, barely any humor, rather badly-developed characters (Kilorn was the worst; reading his character pained me physically), and you don't mind slow-paced writing, then go ahead and read this. But Glass Sword personally disappointed me and eradicated any prospects of reading King's Cage. Victoria, I love you, but you've plateaued!
