Me and the Pumpkin Queen

Me and the Pumpkin Queen

By Marlane Kennedy

Mildred's mom died when she was a toddler. Her mom wanted to try to grow a giant pumpkin and enter it into the Giant Pumpkin Contest at the Pumpkin festival, but never got the chance to. So Mildred has been trying to grow one for years, but every year something bad happens and her pumpkin never makes it to the festival. Her aunt thinks that Mildred is unhealthily obsessed, and that she should stop, but Mildred refuses to. With the support of her dad and her best friend Jacob, this year Mildred hopes to win the prize. What I thought of it: Let's start with the cover. It looks like it was made for a toddler book. It really annoyed me. Not to mention the fact that on the cover, Mildred looked nothing liked she was described, even though they didn't say much about the way she looked. In the book, Mildred says she has bangs, but on the cover she doesn't seem to have bangs. Also, on the cover, Mildred looked like she was about 7 or 8 years old. I found Mildred pretty annoying overall. In the beginning of the book, she was 10, then after a little while she turned 11, and then at the very end of the book she turned 12. The entire book, she sounded as if she were 7. A few times, she said things that a 7-year-old wouldn't necessarily say, but she still sounded really young. I didn't like the way it was written. I found the way Mildred talked very annoying. It was even more annoying when she said something, but (based on the other things she said) it didn't sound like something she would say. Jacob was my favorite character. I thought he was pretty cool, and not at all annoying. I liked Mildred's dad as well. Despite all of it's flaws it was an all right book.

Monster High/Ever After High: The Legend of Shadow High

Monster High/Ever After High: The Legend of Shadow High

By Shannon Hale

Have you ever read Ever After High? What about Monster High? If you've read and loved those books you NEED to get The Legend of Shadow High. The Legend of Shadow High is a mix of Ever After High and Monster High, and you'll love it just as much or more than you loved the other two. When the Evil Queen escapes her mirror prison and starts to investigate a mysterious place called Shadow High, kids from Monster High and Ever After High must work together to stop the Evil Queen before it's too late. The Evil Queen is in over her head, and she doesn't realize what will happen to the World of Stories if she joins all the different lands together. Will Draculaura, Frankie Stein, Raven Queen, and Apple White be able to stop the Queen before it's too late or will their world crumble to pieces? I really enjoyed this book, and it's a great fantasy read for younger elementary school kids. One unique thing I really enjoyed about this book was how it was written like it was being narrarated by another character in the story (Brooke Page) and how Brooke could 'talk' to you at the bottom of the page in the margins. I recommend to read Ever After High and Monster High before you read this though, so that everything makes sense. All in all, you will love the memorable characters in this book, and you won't be able to put this book down until you've finished it. I hope you enjoy!

Captain Awesome to the Rescue!

Captain Awesome to the Rescue!

By Stan Kirby

This book was so great, that I love it. I liked how it was written when Turbo, the hamster, was "hamster-napped". I love queen Stinkypants, who is a baby. Everyone was amazed when Captain Awesome came in the room. Charlie is Captain's best friend.

The Go-for-Gold Gymnasts: Winning Team (Go-for-Gold Gymnasts, The)

The Go-for-Gold Gymnasts: Winning Team (Go-for-Gold Gymnasts, The)

By Dominique Moceanu, Alicia Thompson

Brittany Lee Morgan is an elite gymnast. She and her family moved to Texas so she could go to a world-class gymnastics facility. When she gets there, she comes up with some ideas of conversation starters to talk to the girls there. However, her intentions are mixed up and it causes conflicts between herself and her teammates. When she keeps doing things her way and not listening to her coach, she risks losing her spot on the team as well as almost getting injured. Not only that, but her friend from her old school confessed to her that she spoiled her party when she made everything about her. Even though Brittany seems to have ruined all her friendships, she has not messed up the friendship with her friend Jessie. However, when Brittany notices something about her that nobody has yet, Jessie asks Brittany to keep it a secret. Brittany betrays her trust and tells a coach as well as her team. She now has another conflict within herself- did she do the right thing by telling the coach, or was it wrong of her to tell a secret that wasn't hers to tell? How will she make things right in the end? Overall, I enjoyed this book and I recommend it to people who are interested in gymnastics or like to read books that are realistic about real life situations. I rate this 5/5.
