There is a world behind the canvas. Past the paint of the canvas is a realm where art lives, breathes, creates, destroys.

Claudia Miravista loves art but only sees what is on the surface, until the Dutch boy Pim appears in her painting. Pim has been trapped in the world behind the canvas for centuries by a power-hungry witch, and now believes that Claudia is his only hope for escape. Fueled by the help of an ancient artist and some microwaveable magic, Claudia enters the wondrous and terrifying world, intent on destroying the witch's most cherished possession and setting Pim free. But in that world nothing is quite as it appears on the surface. Not even friendship.

The World Behind The Canvas is about how a girl named Claudia who loves art. One day Claudia sees a boy in a painting that was not there before. She figures out that the boy can talk and his name is Pim. Claudia finds out that there is a world behind the canvas. Pim is stuck there and Claudia has to find out the way to the world behind the canvas and help Pim come back to the real world. My favorite character is Claudia because because she is brave. Here is a quote from the book: " Her fingers tingled as she lightly touched the wooden frame. Then in slow motion, she turned the painting on its wire." If you love art, you should definitely read this!

"...'Synergy, my dear girl. It occurs with paint and canvas but more so with people. Therein lies the wonder of friendship. Two small insignificant beings can suddenly master the world--or at least their own troubles--when they care enough for each other.'" Friendship is the key to overcome any darkness. Meet Claudia, a shy student, who's friends are paint and canvas. One day in a field trip, Claudia sees a boy with the "most awesome blue eyes" in an odd painting and starts introducing herself... however once Claudia had her opportunity to talk to another student, it looked like Claudia was hallucinating... making her seem crazy to her classmates... but in reality... Claudia saw what she saw... After actually meeting Pim (the boy with the nice blue eyes), Granny Custos (an original Artisti) invites Pim and Claudia... Pim tells Granny Custos his gruesome adventure about how Nee Gezicht cursed Pim after "spilling paint all over her dress," so in order to save Pim to be free from Nee Gezicht, Claudia must set out in an adventure... behind the canvas of each painting to steal the staff and to defeat the "Sightless one." Her weakness is that she is afraid of dying... and with the help of Granny's advice and "magic," they can help save the painted world and of course Pim... to actually eat food and be fill, and to actually sleep... After many betrayals that Claudia thought Pim said...they finally mend their friendship and with the help of the one and only Cash... they are set to defeat this horrible witch... Although many past judgements were stated about Pim, it shows that you should believe about what will happen and what is going on as the present and not focus on the past... After many traveling and actually meeting the witch... things become to pace a bit faster and weaves into this intricate web... I love how the author chose different and real paintings to describe each scenery... Also one bonus... there were footnotes on the bottom of the page which provided a lot of background history and information which gives a bit more "oomph" to the book... not only you get a taste of fantasy... you also get a taste of the history of each painting... Like who knew about the Rembrandt Van Rijn... and Rembrandt is a significant character in this book... I feel like I learned so much in one sitting... while going on this adventure with Claudia and Pim... What the author wrote is an amazing tale... once your inside a painting... everything that is in the painting becomes real... it's so amazing.. I can relate because I love art... and acrylic painting has been a specialty... and once you start painting... you're just hypnotized by the different shades and texture that you can do to paint in a canvas... I feel like it's basically about looking behind every story.. .because although things might look right... you still need to look behind the real picture... This heartwarming story will seriously bring a smile to your face... and you might even shed a few tears... (tears of joy/sadness)... I certainly did not see the ending about Pim and Claudia's future happening after the war... but overall this quick read is amazing... Aspiring artists, readers, and anybody who wants inspiration to not give up... this book is perfect for you... Enjoy!! :) Also... you might not see this coming... but nail polish remover is really helpful!!! :D

This was such a fantastic book, filled with plot twists, developed characters, and even cool footnotes to explain and enhance the the story! Claudia, a girl known for having no friends and being a little bit strange, but one day she notices someone move in a painting. Pim, the boy in the painting, becomes one of her best friends, and Claudia will do almost anything to help save him-even facing some of her darkest fears. The footnotes were one of the best parts about the book, as they provided interesting facts and details in a fun and exciting way. I loved the dynamics between the characters, especially Claudia and Pim, and their friendship was so awesome! I hope that artistic enthusiasts will pick this up!

I will have to admit that "Behind the Canvas" was very entertaining. In Behind the Canvas, Claudia is a shy girl with no friends who lives and breathes paintings. She could study paintings forever, and loves to imitate famous pieces. But one day something strange happens-one of the paintings moves. To be more specific, a blue-eyed boy who doesn't belong moves. Then the boy talks and she learns his name is Pim. Pim is a REAL boy who was trapped behind canvas by a witch. Claudia also learns that beyond the human eye is a world like no other. Everything ever painted comes alive in this world. And some real people are there too, including the evil witch Nee Gezicht. Claudia must face any fears to save her only friend from a life behind the canvas. I liked most in this story the concept. The author clearly put a lot of thought into the world beyond each painting. I loved the idea that the paintings were linked to our own world. It wasn't all set in a fantasy location, but was intertwined with modern-day locations. I also liked that the author kept you guessing. You would think one things and then bam!, something else would happen that changed everything. There was a lot of mystery, especially centered around the witch and Pim. An interesting part of this book was that there were footnotes in this book, which is rare for a fiction story. They were mostly about artists mentioned and their paintings, and I found them entertaining and informative, so I knew what was happening in the story. This was an amazing book about friendship and loyalty. I recommend this book to fantasy lovers. There was a lot of magic and adventures, and intense moments where all could end. I would guess that this book is mainly meant for the middle grade. I would think any 10-15 year old would enjoy this story. I rate this book 4 out of 5 stars. I received this book from DOGO as part of the Advanced Review Club.

I loved this book so so much!!!!!!!!!!!! This book is about how a girl named Claudia who loves art. But like most people, she only see's what's on the surface. One day Claudia see's a boy in a painting that was not supposed to be there. Also, he was walking, and talking! Claudia finds out that there is a world behind the canvas, where everything every painted lives. But the boy was not painted. He got cursed by a witch, to stay in the canvas world. Now you might think that this is not too bad, but someone not from the painted world can't eat, or sleep there. So Claudia finds her way into the world behind the canvas, set on rescuing the boy who has become her friend. Will Claudia succeed, or will she die trying? This is an amazing fantasy story to read for all ages. I think that this book's message is to try to look behind the surface sometimes. My favorite character is Claudia because she always does the right thing. I hope you like this book!!!
